Along the Fence Line

Along the Fence Line, 9 x 12, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2023
SOLD

This spring I was commissioned to paint on a private ranch, north of Austin. The final piece will be a gift to the patriarch of a kind and thoughtful family! It's always an honor to be part of projects like this one. I will share more details on process and the final piece later, but the piece above was one of the small pieces I did for consideration. One of my favorites!

Tulip Dance - Show Tip #3

Tulip Dance, 16 x 16, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2016
Sold in Solo Show, "Chasing Color, Finding Light", Davis Gallery

Have you ever noticed that tulips keep growing when you bring them home and put them in water? It's true, they get taller and begin a little dance. Check me on this - it's fun to watch. These crimson beauties graced us with quite a lovely show.

Show Tip #3 - Determine Subject Matter

As I create a show prep outline, I consider how many genres I want to include (still life, interiors, landscape, skies, etc), how many pieces I'll do of each, and what elements will hold them all together (size, style, palette). Early on in this process, I collect and organize my source materials, which include plein air studies, drawings, and photographs. Having those ready and "in the queue", so to speak, eliminates a lot of indecision later on. Once I start painting I can just go for it, and don't have to stop and search around for inspiration.

Of course, changes DO happen in the process. One painting leads to another and my "queue" gets out of order. That is part of the navigation process. It may ultimately take a spontaneous and circuitous route, but I like knowing I have that overarching outline to return to!!!

Morning Pause

Morning Pause, 18 x 18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2014
SOLD

Walking on the beach at sunrise is a wonderful way to start the day. I highly recommend it whenever possible. :) This early morning scene is on St. Simons Island, on the Georgia coast, my home away from home. There is a magical moment when the sun creeps over the horizon and beams out its light. I have to pause and watch every time. It's mesmerizing and rejuvenating.

You may remember a small study I did of just the egret for this painting. Click HERE to revisit that post.

Twilight - Anderson Gallery Exhibit

Twilight, 18 x18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2014

This is one of my favorites from my "Marsh to Seaside" exhibit. Maybe it's because I love the view. It's one that I see every day when I am visiting the Georgia coast, so it feels like home. The warm twilight colors just add to the magic.

"Marshside to Seaside" opens THIS Friday at the Anderson Gallery, St. Simons Island, GA. Click HERE to see the entire show.

Spring Meadow and Summer In The City

Spring Meadow, 18 x 18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013 - SOLD

Summer in the City, 18 x 18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013 - SOLD

These paintings each depict scenes that are so very, very Austin. "Spring Meadow" is a secluded "getaway" spot that is just outside the city limits but seems miles away. Meanwhile "Summer in the City" captures a favorite "night out" spot that is right in the heart of our fun downtown. It's nice to have both. :)

And you guessed it... both of these will be in my show that opens on Saturday!
(Davis Gallery, 837 W. 12th, Austin, TX, reception 7 to 9 pm. Please come.)

Marsh Dance and Afternoon Shadows

Marsh Dance, 24 x 36, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013 - SOLD

Afternoon Shadows (Waterloo Records), 18 x18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013 - SOLD

Reflections on the Georgia marsh reveal a delicate dance between trees, marsh grass and water. The undeniable rhythm of their movement is almost audible. Similarly, dynamic shadows (at our favorite record store in Austin) "step in time" daily as the sun travels across the sky. I love to witness these give and take, forward and back, "swing your partner" performances in nature's grand Do Si Do.

These two paintings will be in my show, "Landscapes: Interior-Exterior" at the Davis Gallery in Austin, Texas. Reception October 5, 7-9pm. Runs through November 16.

Bursting Pomegranate

Bursting Pomegranate, 18 x 18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013
SOLD

This is another new piece just delivered to the Anderson Gallery in St. Simons Island, Georgia. You might remember the small study I did awhile back when a friend brought me these pomegranates from her yard. One of them had burst open on its own in the ripening process; and the translucent kernels inside were so compelling I just HAD to do a larger painting. :)

Paintings of St. Simons Island are coming soon. I finally got the first few pieces photographed today so I can begin posting. I will be painting up a storm down here in the days and weeks to come, so please stay tuned.

Loquat Branch

Loquat Branch, 18 x 18, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2013
SOLD

I just finished a crazy busy week that included a road trip to Georgia, teaching a three day workshop on St. Simons Island, and painting in the beautiful Golden Isles. I will be here for several weeks, enjoying my family and painting the gorgeous scenery I so love. "Loquat Branch" is one of a couple new paintings I brought with me (these loquats are from my backyard in Austin), and it's now available at the Anderson Gallery.
