Marshland Creek - Third Place in Fine Arts and Flowers Show!

Marshland Creek Study, 16 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015
Third Place Winner - Fine Arts and Flowers Exhibit
Glynn Visual Arts, St. Simons Island, Georgia

I am thrilled to share that "Marshland Creek Study" took third place in the Fine Arts and Flowers Exhibit at Glynn Visual Arts on St. Simons Island, Georgia. This is the first time I have participated in a juried show that pairs up painters and floral designers, and I was delighted by the idea. First, the paintings are juried into the show. Next, juried floral artists are each assigned a painting to interpret with flora and fauna. Finally it all comes together in a colorful exhibit. I am honored to be in the winner's circle with painters Nancy Boren (1st place), Katie Dobson Cundiff (2nd place) and John Guernsey (honorable mention.) Although I was unable to attend the opening, I hear it was a gorgeous thing to behold.

The floral interpretation of my painting, arranged by Pat Collins (below), took First Place in the Flower Division. Congratulations to Pat and to all who participated!! Many thanks to the organizers of the show and juror Sarah Lamb.

Stable Grasses

Stable Grasses, 9 x 12, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015

The waving grasses all around this farmstead were thick, and full of color and life. I loved spending a quiet afternoon painting this weathered and comfortable place.

Hill Country Ranch

Hill Country Ranch, 6 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015
SOLD

This is a very typical Hill Country scene; and little paths like this always catch my eye. Here, the combination of red grasses, Bluebonnets, and Black-eyed Susans had a delightful layered effect, and it made me want to walk in to explore a little more. I behaved and stayed outside the gate to paint, but it was awfully tempting! :)

Please join me for a workshop in St. Simons Island, GA. It's a beautiful time to be on the island painting, and I would love to see you there!

Blanketed Hillside

SOLD

Last week, Plein Air Austin met up at a park about an hour outside of town. The forecast said rain, but I had it on my calendar and decided to go anyway. The bluebonnets are always so prolific there in the spring, and I knew this year would be outstanding. The best part was that the sky cleared and the sun even came out for awhile... I was SO glad I didn't get scared off by the weatherman. :)

I have some spaces available in my upcoming workshop on the Georgia coast and would love to see you there. It will be beautiful there and a great time to paint! Please join me...

Bridge on Beverly - Show and Quick Draw

Quick Paint submission for Plein Air Southwest Salon

The Plein Air Southwest Salon opened this weekend at the Southwest Gallery in Dallas, Texas. One of the traditions of this show is an early morning "Quick Draw" which is a timed and very public painting session. The resulting wet paintings get framed, transported, and hung in the gallery before the afternoon reception. It's a bit nerve-wracking, to say the least. This year we painted on Turtle Creek near the Dallas Country Club and I chose a scene with the clubhouse in the distance. I loved how it peeked out behind the bridge. We had a longer window of time than usual, and I really appreciated that. A big thanks to the show organizers, it was a fabulous weekend of art and friends!

Rolling Hills of Color

Rolling Hills of Color, 9 x 12, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015

As you can see, I seem to be on a daily hunt to find wildflowers to paint. They don't last long, so I like to seize the moment when it comes. Some of the prettiest patches are right on the side of our highways. People literally park on the shoulders, plop their kids in the middle of the flowers, and take pictures with traffic whizzing by. I prefer the more secluded patches, and this one was lovely.

Gatehouse Garden

Gatehouse Garden, 8 x 6, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015
SOLD

This past weekend, Plein Air Austin gathered for our annual paintout and picnic. We met at the Barr Mansion, a beautiful old mansion that is now a wedding venue. Although the day was windy, I found a sheltered spot where I could capture a sideview of the mansion's charming little gatehouse. Afterwards, we feasted on BBQ... painting, good friends and yummy food... it was a great day!

Spring Wildflowers

Spring Wildflowers, 6 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015
Click to purchase $120 + $16 s/h

The arrival of wildflowers in Texas is a true parade of color. The Bluebonnets come first, and they are quickly followed by every hue in the rainbow, including these glowing red flowers called Indian Paintbrush (also called Prairie Fire). This field also had a sprinkling of little blue Dayflowers which perfectly accented the orangey-red. I am ever grateful to the late Lady Bird Johnson, for her commitment to beautifying the Texas countryside. Our wildflowers are a huge part of her legacy!

Painted at the Lady Bird Wildflower Center, Austin, TX.

Blue Meadow

Blue Meadow, 12 x 9, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015

Here is another piece from my week of expeditions into the bluebonnet fields. While I was out painting, some friendly hikers shared their thoughts... a cute couple from Minnesota was quite adamant that "Bluebonnets really are purple, not blue" (I think they are both/and), another group pointed out that we have it all wrong here because "in California these flowers are called Lupines" (same plant family), and I got lots of offers for "posing" if I wanted to include a person or two. Never a dull moment. :)
