This misty Hill Country day was challenging... until that dropping sun peaked out. And then, wow, what a reward! The heavy atmosphere brought on a pink shimmer and a quietness that was completely unexpected. My plein air piece captured the other part of the day... cold and flat. Thank goodness for a camera and a very memorable moment! 

Show Tip #12 - Know When to Quit

What I mean by that is... sometimes we over-work. Salespeople call it "selling through the close". This happens when the sale is made but the pitch-giver goes on, actually confusing the situation. I see this in myself and other painters when we don't know when to quit. Sometimes we need to stop because the day is just over. We are tired and depleted of the energy required to make good decisions. But way more often, we need to put down the brushes completely, because a painting is simply done... finished. At that point, to keep painting is to keep "selling", and that can kill the deal so to speak. A good practice is to slow down as you are finishing. Step back a lot, and when in doubt, stop for awhile. Come back with fresh eyes and a discerning heart.

This is one of my favorites from my "Marsh to Seaside" exhibit. Maybe it's because I love the view. It's one that I see every day when I am visiting the Georgia coast, so it feels like home. The warm twilight colors just add to the magic.

Oh, the night sky... it keeps us looking up, doesn't it? I am always mesmerized as the sun sinks on the horizon. Each moment offers a different variety of colors and shapes, only to be topped by the next. It never ceases to amaze. 

These two paintings will be in my show, "Landscapes: Interior-Exterior", at the Davis Gallery in Austin, Texas. The opening reception is THIS Saturday, October 5, 7-9 pm. Please join us!

This is another piece from my show that opened Friday night at the Anderson Fine Art Gallery in St. Simons Island, Georgia. It was a great party and a wonderful time with family and friends - both old and new! My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you who came! Thank you. And now I am enjoying a quiet Monday morning after several weeks of whirlwind activity! It is much needed rest if I do say so myself. :) Here is a glimpse...

Unloading paintings for the show after the long drive from Texas to Georgia... My husband is a packing genius, an "engineer of spaces" we like to say. There were also golf clubs, suitcases, and beach accoutrement squeezed in here (and we could still see through the back window! Amazing.)

A delicious week of painting with buddies from hither and yon...

This larger version of "Sea Oats" is from awhile back, but I am behind in photographing and posting my work. I have been a little distracted - our daughter got engaged two weeks ago! She and her fiance are not getting married until next summer, but some things (like dates and venue) require immediate attention. Suddenly I am in Wedding Planner mode! :) It's such a wonderful time and we are having lots of fun! We couldn't be happier.
