Flora and Fauna Group Show

This has been a crazy and unpredictable year for me, and my posts (or lack there of) have reflected that. I just spent the last four months helping my elderly parents get moved and settled into a senior living community. It was ALL-consuming, and I'm happy to report that they are much closer to my home now, AND that all went well!! YAY!! Hopefully, I will be getting back to a normal cadence soon!

Fall Pasture - 3rd Place Winner at Kerrville Outdoor Painting Event!

3rd Place Winner!!

This past weekend, over 40 artists convened to paint for three days in the Texas hill country at the Kerrville Outdoor Painting Event (KOPE). We had perfect weather, worked hard, and then presented our work at a wet painting show on Saturday night. AND… I won the third place ribbon! Woo Hoo! Julie Davis took first place and Jimmy Longacre took second place. It's an honor to be in the winner's circle with these two dear friends and fabulous painters! Many thanks to the organizers and sponsors of this event; we all had a great time!

This is another one from last week at the Michaelis Ranch... While I was painting out in this pasture, the cattle stayed on the far edges napping in the shade. But at one point the owner arrived and called to them, and they all came! They knew her voice!! It was pretty amazing.

Shady Crowd

On hot Texas afternoons, the shade is the only place to be. These cows found a cool spot and were not about to budge; no matter that they were practically on top of each other!

Quiet Rest

Down a country road in the little town of Hye, Texas, I found these cows resting in the shade. Of course, as soon as I started painting they got up and ambled off into the pasture! Not the best model behavior - luckily I had some sketches to fall back on!

In the studio...

Afternoon Grazing, 24 x 30

This week I have been working on some larger works in the studio. For these, I typically revisit my smaller plein air work where I can really observe nature firsthand... so important for a landscape painter. This piece comes from a September study done in Livingston, Montana.

During the two weeks I spent in the mountains, I kept passing cows in pastures and wishing I could paint them, but there was never a good place to set up. On the last day in Livingston, I finally found a field with room on the shoulder to paint that even had shade!
