An Award and a Red Dot!

Award of Merit Winner!
Plein Air Southwest Salon 2014
Available at the Southwest Gallery in Dallas

If you follow this blog, you will remember that I had a busy weekend with two juried shows in two different cities this weekend. Luckily, both were in Texas (and within driving distance) and I was able to make the awards ceremonies of both….

And so glad I did! It was reward enough to be included in these shows and to see dear friends... but to win an award AND sell a piece at the Plein Air Southwest show was both affirming and validating! I am one happy painter! Thank you for letting me share, and thank you for your many kind words of encouragement!

Jill Carver, the juror for this year's Plein Air Southwest Salon, shared some personal insights before presenting the awards. She is a true master and her thoughtful comments inspired us all!

Quick Draw and an Honorable Mention in the Plein Air Southwest Show!

Plein Air Southwest - Quick Draw Painting

The opening of the Plein Air Southwest Show in Dallas was fabulous... great people, incredible paintings. My big news is that my painting "Summer Morning" won an Honorable Mention! The show was judged by distinguished painter George Strickland, and receiving his affirmation is a great honor indeed. My heart is full and grateful!

This was the annual show of the Outdoor Painters Society, so of course we painted too! On Saturday morning we met up at the Dallas Arboretum for a "Quick Draw"- a timed, 2 hour painting session (and friendly competition). I found these Delphinium beauties in a little courtyard called the Poetry Garden. As the name would suggest, it was off the beaten path a bit... much to my liking.

It was a great weekend all around!

A grinning, happy me with my Honorable Mention ribbon for "Summer Morning".

Morning Splendor - Quick Draw in Dallas

Morning Splendor, 9 x 12, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2012

Wondering what a "quick draw" is??? At a quick draw, participating painters gather at one location for a TIMED painting contest (very popular at plein air events). Think "paint off"... like "dance off" or "sing off"... it's all in good fun, but can we say nerve-racking? Pounding hearts, flying brushes, ticking clock... you get the picture. On Saturday morning, the Outdoor Painters Society hosted a quick draw at White Rock Lake Park in conjunction with our show in Dallas. We had two hours to paint - no more, no less. This is my painting from the morning's effort. I was pretty happy I had something to turn in - it was downright scary. :)

Harbor Channel

Harbor Channel, L. Daniel, 9 x 12

This is the last painting from my trip to the Texas coast... the "backyard" of a bait and fishing shop near Aransas Pass. It was really fun to explore new territory and discover new images down there to paint. In the spring, one or more of these paintings will be on display in the Outdoor Painters Society's annual exhibit, "Plein Air Southwest 2010-11". I am pleased to be juried in and participating for a second year!

Beach Shop

Beach Shop, L. Daniel, 16 x 12

This little house turned shop is called "Potters on Cotter" and, you guessed it, the owners sell beautiful,  hand-thrown pottery. I love the way the morning sun lights up the front of the store - it's a very welcoming little spot just a few blocks from the beach. Another one from my trip to the Texas coast.

Dockside

Dockside, L. Daniel, 6 x 8, SOLD

Back to paintings from Port Aransas on the Texas coast with Outdoor Painters Society... In the afternoon on that first windy day, we found a sheltered spot behind a building on the bay. This small shrimp boat was tied up to a wonderful, dilapidated dock. The scene had so much character; but it was tricky and I think I had to start over 4 times!!! Though it may sound counter intuitive, my final solution was to go smaller (I had been working on a 9x12). The reduced format forced me to simplify and got me over the hump. Whew!

Honorable Mention - Woo Hoo!

Lost Canyon, 16 x 12

Please pardon my re-posting of this painting, but I had to share my excitement about winning an Honorable Mention ribbon at the Outdoor Painters Society's Plein Air Southwest 2009 show in Dallas! Hearing my own name announced was a thrilling moment and I am still pinching myself! Thanks to all of you for your kind words and good wishes!

Happy me!
