Our annual holiday group show opened at the Davis Gallery this weekend. It was wonderful to be together to celebrate Art and this joyful Season of the year! If you are in or near Austin, please drop by and see the work! Here are the details:

Spring Meadow and Summer In The City

These paintings each depict scenes that are so very, very Austin. "Spring Meadow" is a secluded "getaway" spot that is just outside the city limits but seems miles away. Meanwhile "Summer in the City" captures a favorite "night out" spot that is right in the heart of our fun downtown. It's nice to have both. :)

And you guessed it... both of these will be in my show that opens on Saturday!

Summer Meadow - Door County Plein Air

When I stumbled upon this golden meadow, I couldn't pass up the glorious color with the young birch-ling standing in the middle of it. I have always loved trees and birch trees were my childhood favorite when my family went camping in Northern Wisconsin. My sisters and I would peel off sheets of the papery bark, and write letters on them (don't worry, I didn't peel this one). Occasionally, we'd hit the jackpot and find large chunks of hollowed out birch bark from a fallen tree. These made great receptacles for all of our "stuff" (which consisted of rock, feather and driftwood treasures we were also collecting.)

One of the highlights of being in Wisconsin was reconnecting with dear family friends from my hometown of Racine. I didn't manage to get pictures with everyone, but here are some of the friends who surprised me mid-week...

Personal update: In the morning, I am heading out on a great adventure to paint on the Georgia coast for 5 weeks! (Details to come). My husband and I are taking a little road trip to get there and stopping in New Orleans on the way. While we are on the road, I'll be posting some recently finished work. As soon as I get organized and painting in GA, I will post from there... I am so excited!!!

Commission Studies

These two small studies were the first step in my recent commission process. I used them to show how placement of the horizon line would impact the overall "feeling" of the scene and then, of course, to choose. With the horizon line placed low, the painting is all about the big sky and vastness of the land; placed high, the painting is all about the closeness of the field grasses. It's a very slight shift that results in a significantly different perspective. (BTW, there is no right answer here, it's just personal preference. My client and I both preferred the top one. See Saturday's post for final commission painting.)
