What is it about little nooks and homey stopping places? They give me visual rest and physical rest in the busy flow of life. This charming little corner graced a beach cottage we rented a few summers ago. We stayed long enough to put our stuff in the drawers and loved every minute. (That's the trick to feeling at home you know... put your stuff in the drawers like you're never leaving!) 

Show Tip #24 - Stay the Course
When the last paintings are finally drying, I feel both elation and letdown, and a huge desire to put my feet up. However, there is still work to be done and now is not the time to rest on my laurels (so to speak). It may not be as fun as smearing paint on a canvas, but pulling the last details together is really important. So after taking the weekend off, it's back to business until the last i's are dotted and final t's are crossed for my show. This week I'll be framing the last paintings and cataloging. I don't want to reach the end and be panicked about any of those pesky details! The goal is to finish well!

Streaming Light Value Study

My challenge for Daily Paintworks this week is to paint using only a range of grays. The point of this exercise is to closely observe the darks and lights in a subject, and then hang onto them while painting. It's quite easy to lose a grip on these values because color can be so confusing. Taking a break from color every once in awhile helps me "see" my way back to what the values are truly doing. 

Below is my pre-mixed range of grays, using Titanium White and Ivory Black. Normally, I do not have black on my palette, but mix a rich black with Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. For this exercise, using a tube black helped me keep my range of grays consistent (and kept all color out of the mix.)

When I set about to paint my "marsh to beach" series, I knew this beach house corner would be included. It radiates a timelessness and history that take me back to my first visits to St. Simons Island 35 years ago. The golden isles have had a piece of my heart ever since.

Captured here are two Texas icons: the Guadalupe River which runs through the Hill Country and the Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. Something about the color palette and the low focal point in each connects these two paintings. Sure, one is a nature scene and one is an interior, but both send the viewer's gaze (and the painter's gaze) into a thoughtful distance of repose.

This is another comfy corner at the French Legation here in Austin (originally built in 1841 to establish a French presence in the new Republic of Texas.) It was a pretty lavish home for the times, and I love its simple elegance. I was especially intrigued by the warm reflections and dramatic shadows emanating from this glowing ruby lamp.
