Hydrangea in Blue - Fix It Friday #18

This painting needed to be fixed, literally, as in repaired. I was taking it home to finish later, and it rubbed against another wet painting in my carrier. I didn't see the transferred paint until all had dried. It was tempting to just toss the whole thing, but I hate not finishing something! ;)

CHANGES:
Problem - Painting had unwanted paint transferred from another painting.
Fix - Tackled problem area by building it back up with my dark neutral (ultramarine and burnt siena), as if starting from scratch in that area. But before I began, I oiled out ( with refined linseed oil) and rigorously buffed the entire surface. I often do this when painting back in. It helps the new paint flow on better.

Problem - It needed a background (I wiped out first attempt on location).
Fix - Reworked background colors. I wanted something that would capture the sense of dappled light, and would not fight with the blue of the hydrangea. After a number of attempts, I think I finally got there.

OBSERVATIONS:
Make sure to pack your wet panel carrier properly!
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again... ;)

Workshop Demo - Sold

I just finished teaching a workshop in St. Simons Island, GA. It was an plein air class, and we had pretty much perfect weather. I love it when that happens! We focused on "garden vignettes" and tried to capture a sense of place, as we considered the basics of painting outside. Each day we met in a different, private (and very beautiful) garden. This is my demo of one little corner at Judy's house from the first day... Thank you, Judy!

I couldn't resist taking another shot at these gorgeous Lace-cap Hydrangeas (see my last post for first one). This piece is a little looser and abstract, as I was mostly focused on the shapes and color relationships. And I do love that blue!

I do love hydrangeas and the Lace-cap is one of my favorite varieties. When I see them growing in a garden (or anywhere for that matter) I am captivated by their magical, delicate forms. Nature is a constant wonder, don't you think?

Garden Hydrangea

I have watched this Hydrangea in our beach house garden go from leaves only, to little pink-tipped buds, to full-on flower. This process was duplicated in gardens all over the island and they are now in full display everywhere. They are a real garden staple in the south and have fabulously brilliant color; the soil must be perfect for them.
