Hilltop Chapel, L. Daniel, 6 x 8, SOLD
Oh, the morning light on this little chapel... so gorgeous!!! This little painting is one of several studies done in preparation for a larger piece I painted this week. Sometimes it helps me to paint something from several views just to get the subject in my heart and head.
Side note: I have a big show coming up in April at the Davis Gallery here in Austin, so I am in full painting mode and will be for awhile!!! For now, I will just post the studies and save the larger pieces to show until later.

Oh wow, I have a "thing" for churches (along with my "thing" for barns)! This is fantastic and I love the light on the church.
ReplyDeleteThis is really wonderful, Laurel... A great study and an interesting thought... about painting several views of the same thing before getting a "feel" for it.
ReplyDeleteEnjoying your terrific "studies" while waiting to see those that you deem good enough for the show.
Wow! That is really spectacular.
ReplyDeleteLaurel,
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful. Your compositions are outstanding. I just love the way you painted the light on the chapel and the steeple is almost in silouette against the sky. Look forward to the big pieces to see what you choose from the little studies.
Just found your blog and think your work is incredible!!
ReplyDeleteI like the strong composition. You mention the morning light, but for me it's really the composition that defines this painting. The scenery is reduced to just serve as a tool and becomes a minor, unimportant detail to how the shapes and values create contrast while competing for dominance with each other. Well balanced tension like this makes a great painting. I love it, Laurel!
ReplyDeleteVery evocative - it reminds me of a rural church around here.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your upcoming show!
Great subject Laurel--and you know I like the Swedish connection! I look forward to seeing a studio version.
ReplyDeletei like the composition a lot, with the church to the side, it really adds to the lovely mood
ReplyDeleteThe church and the road make for a wonderful combination of elements. The painting has one moving through the space. Lovely-lovely!
ReplyDeleteVery calm- very subtle.
ReplyDeleteI like how the little chapel keeps you on the road.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the show! Lucky for us we get to see all the studies.
Lovely, Laurel. Great color/tone, and love the composition.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurel,
ReplyDeleteI adore this painting! I just wanted to let you know that I chose it as my favorite daily painting on my blog rosaspicks.wordpress.com. I hope you’ll come by and check it out.
Thanks, Rosa
I agree with so many others. It was initially the composition that really caught my eye I and drew me in. The subtle colors are especially nice and the strong value contrasts dynamic. And the road leads you on. What's that song. The road goes on forever and the party never ends!!! Good luck with your show. Can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteI agree, your subdued palette is very striking. Looking forward to your show in April!
