Recently I have been getting the urge to add people into my paintings. I'm not exactly sure why, but with this painting it was overwhelming. When I got it home (finished but with no figures), I decided to go for it. I got my brushes back out and added the suggestion of a few beach lovers into the scene, working from photos I had taken. It changed everything.
It's a beauty Laurel. Figures in landscapes do change everything as you have said. It gives indication that life is still happening on earth. It gives identification - we can relate to it. And, it invites us into the scene. Your figures are just right - implied rather than stated - wonderful!

ReplyDeleteI think adding figures to this scene was an excellent "out of the blue" idea. It adds so much to the painting. What was the guy looking at on the bridge? Is that woman going for a run or a fast walk? I have been receiving your painting blog for quite some time now...not sure I have ever written before. Your figures made me do it! I agree with comments above. Adds intimacy to the scene and makes me want to jump in the picture and go for a walk! Thanks for sharing your world through you paintings.
ReplyDeleteNice job on the people, Laurel! The tricky part when composing from separate photos is figuring out the appropriate sizes and placement. You did it - they look just right.
