This is my last studio piece painted from my Long Island plein air studies... for now anyway. Being there this summer pushed me in some different (and sometimes scary) ways... all you creatives out there know what I mean. Sometimes art and fear go hand in hand. And fear can be good if it's the kind that makes you take a risk and try something new.
I love the light in the sky in this one. You were not far from Nova Scotia, and my soul's dream home. And this reminds me of that now far off beauty. This is spectacular.
Marian - I really love the square format and probably more than half my paintings are square. I like the fact that it's a little unexpected and adds a contemporary feel. It also requires some compositional thought which I enjoy. I like to make vertical landscapes for the same reasons.
Oh Laurel,

I love this, Laurel! Just beautiful! Your style is evolving in a new and exciting direction! I can hardly wait to see more!
ReplyDeleteYou should teach a class just on skies. And trees. Oh, and water. And fog.
ReplyDeleteIt's also exciting that you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. There's no doubt you will handle the unknown beautifully, as always.
I totally agree! (about fear)
ReplyDeleteLove seeing the enlargements. For me it's as if you've distilled and clarified what was so special about the small ones.
Another nice one, Laurel...
ReplyDeleteQuestion....
I'm wondering why you are using the square canvas.... just because... ??? or is there a specific reason.
Just curious...
Thanks guys!!!
