Hidden Egret

Hidden Egret, 8 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2023

I know this Egret thinks she is blending in as she stalks her prey in the marsh grasses, "hiding in plain sight" so to speak. And I do believe that she can stand still enough, for long enough, to catch a little breakfast. Of course for us, her showy white feathers give her away completely. These beautiful white birds are total head turners. They get me every time.

If you like Egrets, here is another...

Waiting

Waiting, 6 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2023

Oh, how I love these birds! They stalk the marsh and beach, just waiting for breakfast. Standing ever so still, they "hide" in plain sight... but when a morsel of food swims by, they are quick to pounce. Mesmerizing!

Silent Silhouettes

Silent Silhouettes, 20 x 20, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2019
Sold in solo show, "Beaches, Birds and Botanicals"
Anderson Fine Art Gallery

I caught this egret just as the day was ending, and everything was in silhouette. I love how simple shapes can tell the whole story. As a painter, I try to let this happen whenever I can, and fight every temptation to add extraneous detail.

Marsh Hunter - upcoming solo show!

Marsh Hunter, 20 x 20, oil on canvas, L. Daniel © 2019
SOLD at the Anderson Fine Art Gallery, St. Simons Island, GA

I was transfixed by the architecture of this Egret (love that curvy neck), especially as he stalked his prey. These birds are fun to watch, because they stand completely still as they wait for a fish or an insect. Then, when a tidbit of food shimmies by, they pounce! I also loved the reflections... I always love reflections!

Show update: Paintings are at the framer in GA, being fitted right now. Opening reception: April 12, 2019 from 6-7:30 pm. SOOOO EXCITED!

In Search - Show Tip # 13

In Search, oil on canvas, 17 x 9, L. Daniel © 2016
Sold in Solo Show, "Chasing Color, Finding Light", Davis Gallery

I love these birds. They roost and watch and pounce in their hunt for dinner. It's fun to watch. I painted a smaller version of this guy for my "Paint the Flying Spirit" challenge on Daily Paintworks last year. The challenge was based on a quote from painter Robert Henri which bears repeating, "Paint the flying spirit of the bird, not its feathers". That was my goal in painting this, to not get bogged down in the details but to try and catch the spirit of the great bird in flight.

Show Tip #13 - Stay Updated
When I am completely focused on painting this new body of work, it's very easy to forget about other tasks. Things like updating my website, blogging and writing newsletters is hard when I've been painting all day. But here is what I know, if I keep things updated, I am saving myself from a last minute rush that is usually wrought with system failures, operator errors, and all around frustration. This is about survival. But this tip has a marketing value. In addition to staying ahead of the panic curve, I am also getting the work out there where it can be seen and previewed! I can direct interested collectors and friends to my website or blog to see what I am doing. I am not always successful with staying out in front of this stuff, but when I do it's a win-win!

Flying Egret

Flying Egret, 8 x 6, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2015
SOLD
Available to ship March 18 (wet paint)

My final challenge for Daily Paintworks (for now anyway) is inspired from another quote by Robert Henri, to "Paint the flying spirit of the bird, not its feathers." The idea he tried to convey to artists was that it is the spirit of the thing that is important. This translates into not getting carried away with too many petty details. Editing can be tricky, but with my own challenge in mind, I tried to keep this study fresh and gestural. I love these birds, have I mentioned that?

Egret Reflections Study 1

Egret Reflections Study 1, 6 x 8, oil on panel, L. Daniel © 2014
SOLD

I have a new obsession with these beautiful white Egrets that live in the marshes and hunt on the beach. When they appear in the landscape, they add a little bling-like sparkle of brightness and life. Since I'm working on some larger pieces that include some of these guys, I started out with a couple of small studies. It helped me to play around with the color and forms on a small scale before jumping in.
